  1. Do you agree with starting a sentence with "but"? (read Afonso's article)

    1. Due to our belief in free expression and our culture of modernism, we here at the Woluwe Independent do not condemn use of the word "but" at the beginning of sentences, though some may claim this to be cacology. Ernest Gowers, author of Plain Words, called the consideration of the use of such words at the beginning of sentences an error "a faintly lingering superstition". He also adds "The OED gives examples ranging from the 10th to the 19th c.; the Bible is full of them."

      After consulting Afonso, we decided this is a subjective matter rather than an error and though we agree that in terms of style this may not be ideal, we allow our writers to express themselves without excess criticism.
